Smile The Publicist Turned Journalist

Hey. My name is Zack Isaacs. Next week, I graduate from Loyola Chicago with a Master's in Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC), long thought of as the business side to the journalism industry.

Right now, I enter an already crowded market place with hopes of making myself stand out.

It's tough, but I feel confident that I can be hired at some Chicago TV station. I just have to remain hopeful and perfect my craft.

I have begun posting on YouTube and iReport. So, that's a start.

But I just need to find the right place to begin my career. Any suggestions?

Hi Zack! I don't have any suggestions at the moment, but wanted to welcome you to the forum. There haven't been a lot of active posters here, but I think that it's about to pick up. Feel free to invite your friends to join. You don't need to be 'in the business' to sign up.

I'm not trying to be flip here but I can't honestly tell anyone with a good clean conscience to get into this business anymore. What was once a creative fun place is turning into a GM metal stamping plant. Layoffs, cutbacks, tight budgets. All in the middle of a forced conversion to digital which is costing every station millions of dollars. Add to that technology that is replacing humans and I can't say the future looks very bright. I'm at the point where I'm hoping my job will still exist till I'm at retirement age.

There will always be jobs in news and in TV....they might be 2 different places though. I think the days of people working 30 years in the same place will be ending. Go ahead, jump in the pool somewhere....but what I would suggest, as when driving, keep your eye on the road ahead of you....look to the horizon...be ready for change and make that change ahead of everyone else. Those resistant to change will be left behind and become dinosaurs.

Ever read the book 'Who Moved My Cheese'? Do it. You can get it at the library...in fact, it's such a fast read, don't even check it out, just sit there and read it, might only take an hour. Armed with that message, you'll be ready for the future of broadcasting.
